Paint Your House, Get Solar Power

Header

Discovery News

Putting solar panels on your house can be a big, costly construction project. Now imagine simply painting the roof and getting electricity from that. At Notre Dame, professor of chemistry and biochemistry Prashant Kamat led a group that found a mixture of nanometer-sized titanium dioxide particles, coated with either cadmium sulfide or cadmium selenide and suspended in a water-alcohol mixture to create a paint-like paste that generates electricity when exposed to light. They gave it a name: Sun-Believable. Read more

Consulting-Specifying Engineer

When you see an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 2200 mark on a completed genset system, is it fact or fiction? The natural response would be, well yes, it’s UL 2200—right? After all the time spent in researching and specifying the genset, mounting location, features and accessories, well yes, we specified UL 2200. Don’t be too sure. Read more

Generating electricity and jobs

Electric Grid in Texas Faces Multiple Challenges

Header

New York Times

Will the lights stay on in 2012? Texas electricity experts cannot say for certain. The state’s electric grid operators are coming off a tumultuous year, one they are not eager to repeat. What happens next year will largely depend on the weather. While a piping-hot summer could spur blackouts, as electricity use spikes because of air-conditioning loads, winter shortfalls are looking less likely. Read more

Smart Grid News

Any major change in technology has its share of skeptics and electric vehicles are no exception. But if the researchers, consultants and other observers are right, you will be seeing them more and more on the road and in the driveway. It will be a gradual wave – certainly not an eruption – but they're coming. The car makers touting their new all-electric and plug-in rides certainly believe it. And so do the organizations, technology companies and electric utilities working to ensure they can be successfully integrated into the smart grid. Read more

Record conductivity achieved in strained lattice organic semiconductor

Header

PhysOrg

In a paper to be published online by the journal Nature, researchers at Stanford led by chemical engineer Zhenan Bao have changed that equation by improving the ability of the electrons to move through organic semiconductors. The secret is in packing the molecules closer together as the semiconductor crystals form, a technique engineers describe as straining the lattice. Read more

Hazardous Locations
Essentially, hazardous locations code rules focus on keeping fuel sources separated from ignition sources (electrical arcs and heat). This text reveals how this is done—carefully and methodically. The intent of this book is to provide training material and resources for students and to assist those involved with designing, installing, inspecting and maintaining electrical systems in hazardous (classified) locations.
